World Cup Champ Denilson Signs Sponsorship Deal with 888poker

888poker took a page out of PokerStars’ playbook with the signing of retired Brazilian football superstar Denilson as a brand ambassador.

888poker announced the signing yesterday, continuing a trend started by PokerStars in signing footballers to online poker sponsorships.

Denilson Becomes 888 Poker’s First Brazilian Sports Star Signing

Monday’s announcement was historic as this is the first time a Brazilian sports star has signed a contract to represent the world’s second-largest online poker room.

According to Denilson, “All my friends started to play poker and so I got more and more interested in the game

"Many of the qualities you need to be a successful footballer can help you improve your poker game. 888poker is one of the biggest and best poker platforms in the world, so I am very proud to join the 888poker team.

"I hope it will help develop my own poker skills as well as encourage new players to get involved in this exciting game."

888poker signed Luis Suarez to a contract back in 2014 but the site quickly ended the deal after Suarez bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match.

Denilson will begin working on his game with the Brazilian 888poker Team Pros Bruno Politano, Nicolau Villa-Lobos and Bruno Kawauti

2002 World Cup Title Among Career Highlights

Denilson had a 16-year pro football career, playing mostly with Sau Paulo and Real Betis.

He was a member of two World Cup squads, helping Brazil to win the 2002 World Cup although playing solely as a substitute.

He also helped Brazil win the 1997 Copa America and the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup. He earned the Golden Ball in during the 1997 Confederations Cup.

In 1998, Denilson set the record for most expensive transfer in history when he accepted a £21.5 million deal to go to Real Betis. His record lasted until the following year.

After leaving Betis in 2005 he moved around to several teams before retiring in 2010. His most notable stops were with FC Dallas of Major League Soccer in 2007 and Palmeiras in 2008.
