Producers Screw Up Season Seven of High Stakes Poker
The announcement was made today that Gabe Kaplan is out as the host of High Stakes Poker and in his place, we get comedian Norm McDonald. In addition, this season if High Stakes Poker will be in 3-D. Also, no Full Tilt Pro's will appear on the show.
First, I hate the McDonald move. Gabe Kaplan was a great host and brought an air of legitimacy to the broadcast. Yes, Kaplan was a TV personality, but he is also a poker player, and has been so since before it was cool. What has McDonald done? He has $26k in cashes lifetime, and both of those were in 2006. Sure, that is MUCH better than someone with $1.7 MILLION in lifetime earnings, has actually won poker tournaments, and even made a WPT final table.
Next, I think that not having the Full Tilt players on there is a big mistake. Think of who you miss out on seeing as a result. You won't see Ivey, Seidel, Jungleman12, and even Tom Dwan. Essentially, this has become the Big Game 2 with folks that don't threaten to boycott. High Stakes Poker can't control Full Tilt's policies, but I think this is a bad move.
Finally, why do we need to see this in 3-D? What are they going to do, throw the chips towards the camera. Look out! The chips may hit you!!! One of the best examples of how this 3-D craze has gone overboard.
Ratings will drop for this season is my opinion. I can't see myself watching this season that much. The lineup for the most part is just not that interesting unless they could make the table Selbst, Mercier, Galfond, Brunson, Duhamel, and Laak for the entire series. Even then, I doubt I would watch more than 2 episodes.
I feel this will be the beginning of the end for this great program unless they wise up after this season. As always, time will tell.
