The Science of Poker by: Dr Mahmood N Mahmood Review

11 April 2008, By:

This book is an excellent source of Poker Odds for the games Limit and Pot Limit Omaha, Texas Holdem and Seven Card Stud. It is written in 4 basic parts that are People, Probabilities and Money in part one. Then it goes into detail about starting hands and probabilities relevent to firstly Omaha then Texas Holdem and finally Seven Card Stud. It also goes into detail covering the most common situations reguarding after the flop play for Omaha and Texas Holdem and beyond 4th street in 7 Card Stud.

If you already have a good understanding of odds, ie, the odds of a flush draw before and after the flop. Or the odds related to straight draws before and after the flop and the odds of catching hands like trips, two pairs etc, then this book probably isnt for you.

Additional Information

Dr Mahmood was born in Iraq and educated in the UK. He has a BSc, M Phil and PhD in Chemistry as well as a BSc in Physics. He took early retirement in 1992 to become a semi pro poker player.

This book is an excellent read for beginners to intermediate players at online poker sites, or someone who is trying to learn either Omaha or 7 Card Stud. It is full of need to know odds and has a good idea on starting hand requirements and how to play them after the flop. It isnt all that boring to read either like a lot of books that go into odds etc, plus it has a vast array of example hands that are common to all three types of poker illustrated. Therefore I would reccomend this book to any intermediate player on Poker Junkie and give it an overall score of 4 stars.
