$300,000 Super High Roller Bowl Sells Out in 6 Hours; Negreanu Stiffed

6 February 2017, By: compncards
The 2017 Super High Roller Bowl is still over three months away but the majority of the field has been set.

Negreanu on the outside - for now.

Registration opened last Thursday and the at-large seats sold out in a record six hours forcing officials to take unusual steps to finalize the field.

While many of the regulars in the high stakes poker world secured their seats, a few big names missed out including poker's winningest tournament pro.

Sell Out in Six Hours, Lottery Held for 35 At-Large Seats

Registration for the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl began last Thursday at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Players interested in playing the event were required to put up a $30,000 deposit towards the buy-in to secure their seat.

Amazingly, 54 players put up the deposit in a mere six hours, creating a dilemma for organizers. Only 35 at-large seats are available meaning that some players were going to be turned away.

Rather than arbitrarily turn away players, Aria decided to hold a lottery similar to what you see in the NBA. The lottery was held on Friday with numerous depositors on hand to watch the draw.

Daniel Negreanu conducted the draw, pulling out numbers that corresponded to names on a sheet. A who's who of high stakes poker were among those selected in the draft.

Among those that successfully secured their seat during the draw included Antonio Esfandiari, John Juanda, Erik Seidel, Brian Rast, David Peters, Scott Seiver, Doug Polk, Fedor Holz and 2016 Champion Rainer Kempe.

Negreanu, though, failed to draw his own name during the official draw. An extra ball fell out right after the final number was drawn and that extra number was Negreanu's.

Ivey, Hellmuth Wild Cards?

While Negreanu failed to secure his seat, that doesn't mean he won't be playing. The final 15 seats in the event will be determined by Aria and will include special qualifiers, celebrity guests and high-profile poker pros that are "good for TV."

Considering their popularity, odds are that Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth will get a special invite to buy into the event.

One name noticeably absent from the field on Thursday is Phil Ivey. Ivey did not post the deposit for the event, making one wonder if he is planning on skipping it or if he figures that Aria will invite him anyway.

The 2017 Super High Roller Bowl will be held May 28 - 31 at Aria in Las Vegas. This year's prize pool is a guaranteed $15 million with $5 million going to first place.
