The Doctor is In
Unless you are an older poker player, odds are you have never heard of Dr. Max Stern. Dr. Stern is an old school poker player with three WSOP bracelets. He won his first in 1995 in Omaha Hi-Lo, and his 2nd and third in 1997 when he won the $3,000 NL Holdem and $2,500 Stud 8 or Better Events. In 1997, he and his wife Maria became the first husband and wife to win a bracelet in the same year. She won the $1,500 7 Card Stud Event that year.
The reason I am talking about Dr. Stern today is that he just finished 3rd in the $1,500 Stud 8 or Better event. Once I saw that he made Day 3, I was rooting for him to make the final table. Of course, I wanted him to win, but he never got over 300,000 in chips. He still managed to finished 3rd to take his largest cash since 1998.
I donât consider Dr. Stern a friend, but I have played with him several times in events around Vegas. As anyone that has played with him can attest to, he is one of the nicest guys you can play with at the table. If you didnât know him, you would think he is just your average poker player.
Dr. Stern is far from your average player. He plays all of the games and plays them exceptionally well. He still makes final tables around Vegas almost every year and is a potential force in any event he plays in. And one of the best things is that if he loses, no big deal. As he told me the first time he knocked me out of an event, âBetter luck next time.â
I really enjoy it when the old school guys do well in events. It great that Dr. Stern finished in 3rd. I would have loved to see him take his 4th bracelet, but over $60,000 in prize money is not a bad consolation.
