Phil Laak Wins First Bracelet - WTF!?!?
Congratulations to Phil Laak for winning his first bracelet.
WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!? Phil Laak won a bracelet?!?!? O_O
Yup, Phil Laak just took down Event #1 at the World Series of Poker Europe for his first bracelet and £ 170,802. He survived a stacked field of 244 players and a final table that included Chris Bjorin.
Also, don't forget that he did this all while playing with a broken arm and recovering from a serious accident he had last month.
The last time Laak sniffed a major poker title was in 2005 when he finished 2nd to Johnny Chan in the $2,500 PL Holdem Event at the World Series of Poker. You might remember that one for Laak doing pushups during heads-up play.
Yes, Laak has had some six-figure cashes since that time. You will also notice that most of those cashes were televised events. Phil Laak is indeed a great player, but his results have been erratic.
I personally like Laak. He is somewhat out there, but he isn't a jerk. He is a guy that you tend to root for, even though you know he is going to fail a good portion of the time. However, when he does succeed, you are that much happier for him.
The only downside that I can give to this win is the fact that it is a WSOP-E bracelet and not a Vegas bracelet. While the location shouldn't matter, even the pros don't give the Europe bracelet as much weight. If they did, they would have been included on some of these major prop bets. However, the reality is that while the fields are more solid, they are a lot smaller and the pros have a better shot to win. Perhaps at some point the Europe bracelets will carry the same perceived weight, but for now they are not perceived the same.
With that being said, it is still a bracelet. Phil Laak can now claim himself to be a bracelet winner. What this does for his career will remain to be seen, but for now I am sure he is enjoying getting that monkey off his back.
If only Andy Bloch could run like Phil Laak.....
