Despite all the talk of poker as a Global Phenomenon, the European Invasion of the WSOP or that The Russians are Coming, if we look at the cold numbers, the US dominance is overwhelming.

While the 2009 WSOP Main Event is raging at the Rio, let's take a step back and look at the statistics of this year's biggest poker fest.

Record number of entrants - 60,875

Despite hundreds of players being prevented from playing in the sold out 2009 WSOP Main Event (6,494 entrants), the total attendance this year actually set a new record!

Everything said and done, the total number of entries stopped at 60,875.

Mostly American WSOP crowd

First there's the US, then there's nothing

Even if it's true that hordes of European players have invaded the Series in the last five years or so, and the rest of the world is beginning to wake up, the US dominance is completely uncontested.

Regardless of what specific numbers you choose to look at - number of entrants, bracelets, cashes or total winnings, USA is in a very strong first place. Then there's nothing, nothing, nothing. Then comes Canada and then the rest of the world.
