PokerJunkie.com loves the underdog

The poker boom of the last few years has certainly been great for PokerJunkie.com. We couldn't be happier to be a part of it and we can't wait to see what comes next, in online poker or the poker world at-large.

But we also remember what things were like before that boom: we were a much smaller community of online poker players true to their sport and their colleagues, competing for scarce resources and a legitimacy in the sporting community that was far from forthcoming.

With that history in mind, we've making a conscious effort to give back to others in the same boat - those small groups of committed enthusiasts still trying to build a larger community and support network for themselves and their sport.

We've already signed on to support "Team Santa Fe Adventure Racing," an inspirational team of multi-sport athletes from the United States who take on grueling adventures for the sake of both health and fitness and some great national charities.

We're happy to add a new group of athletes - inspiring in their own right - to the PokerJunkie.com sponsorship list.

 K.I.K.K. United - Women Football

The 23 ladies of K.I.K.K. (Kick in Kulan i Krysset) United Football Club were born under a painter's palate of international flags.

But although brought up in different parts of the world, they're united on the muddy pitches of Central London's Regent's Park every Sunday - where they share green tops, shorts and socks and a passion for women's football and the community that can be built with it.

And PokerJunkie.com couldn't be happier to sponsor them in that quest.

Coke is it

It all comes back to a simple coke can: Two Swedish girls, out enjoying the world-famous London pub culture, came stumbling across an empty can of coke. A few kicks later, a dormant passion for football had re-surfaced and spurred them to the creation of perhaps the next great super power in women's football, K.I.K.K. United.

Now 23 members strong and led by managers Miss Fit and Malin Ekman, the team brings that shared passion to Division 2 South of Greater London's Regional Women's Football League, and specifically to Regents Park every Sunday at 10:30.

Most of the time, anyway. If the weather holds. And they aren't kicked off the pitch by a guy's team or an obnoxious referee. And the game isn't too early. And no one's sick or hungover.

But: if all those obstacles are overcome? Watch out. K.I.K.K. unites in spirit and team play, and plays some nice football - steamrolling right through the rain, the mud, and, frequently, their opponents.

Most importantly, though, they do so in the name of good fun. And in promoting a camaderie amongst women footballers in a sporting climate still heavily biased in favor of the men.

With any luck, PokerJunkie.com and K.I.K.K. United can help to change that, and we're proud to sponsor them in their endeavor to do so.
