Monday, Feb 23, 2009 Scotty Nguyen Back in the Saddle - Wins LAPC H.O.R.S.E.
"The Prince of Poker" has once again shown his superior overall poker skills by winning the H.O.R.S.E. event at the LA Poker Classic.
Scotty Nguyen made poker history when he won the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event at the 2008 WSOP last summer. He was accused of playing drunk and acting badly at the table, but no-one can take away the glory of winning "The Chip Reese Memorial Trophy."
The $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. at the LA Poker Classic isn't as prestigious, but it was still a very tough tournament with 96 entrants, including top players such as Howard Lederer, Erik Seidel, David "Chino" Rheem, Jeff Madsen, Chris Ferguson, Annie Duke, Barry Greenstein, Men Nguyen, John Cernuto, Allen Cunningham, Layne Flack, Mike Matusow, Amnon Filippi, Gavin Smith, Eli Elezra, Jennifer Harman and Cyndy Violette.
Scotty Nguyen defeated them all and took home the $340,993 first prize. He defeated 2008 WSOP Main Event finalist David "Chino" Rheem heads-up, with Jeff Madsen finishing in third place.
"Before I came down to play this tournament, I told myself 'I'm going to dominate,'" Nguyen said after the event.
"This was a good field to play against. But the win here and at the WSOP has got to make people consider me number one in H.O.R.S.E."
Final-table results:
1st Scotty Nguyen $340,993
2nd David Rheem $182,477
3rd Jeff Madsen $122,573
4th Chris Tsiprailidis $86,630
5th Matt Graham $66,355
6th Bob Golick $52,531
7th Amnon Filippi $40,550
8th John Monnette $29,491
The LA Poker Classic Main Event started this weekend at the Commerce Casino. Antonio Esfandiari tops the field after day 2. Scotty Nguyen has been knocked out of the tournament.
