Full Review of UB

Summary of UB

UB - formerly UltimateBet - is a trendsetter in online poker. The software offers great design and reliability and a lot of novel features, such as the ability to fold and show.

UB is among the top ten sites when it comes to poker traffic - for ring games as well as tournaments. It is now one half of the Cereus network, which also hosts Absolute Poker. The game variation is impressive and there's a lot of games at high stakes if you're interested in playing or watching.

Promotions and a loyalty programs are very generous. Several poker pro endorsers participate in the games. UB doesn't seem to have any major weaknesses.

Promotions and Bonus Information

The promotions at UB are respectable. As a PokerJunkie player you’ll enjoy a really healthy $1100 sign-up bonus! With a deposit match of 111%, you need to deposit $991 to get the maximum bonus. Of course, any lower deposit amount will also give you the 111% bonus.

The refer-a-friend program is more than decent - you get up to $100 for each friend you invite (under the usual condition that he or she makes a cash deposit and so on.) During the game year there are recurring reload bonuses, usually at around 20% match up to $100 or so.

The loyalty program at Ultimate Bet is pretty ambitious and gives you a reason to hang around. All real-money hands and tournament fees that you contribute add to your player points account. The points build up really quick and let you buy cool merchandise or enter special freerolls.

Big weekly guaranteed tournaments, numerous WSOP qualifiers and more than a few freerolls add a lot of value for active players. As a little spice to the bankroll-regulated every day grind, every hour a couple of High Hand Jackpots are granted to the best hands shown down.

Poker Traffic

When it comes to ring game traffic, UB places in the top ten positions world wide, at this writing (May 2008). The number of real money players in ring games touches in the 2,500 at peak hours. In the tournament department, peak hour traffic is very good and sometimes exceeds 20,000 real money players.

Being a US friendly site, the UB traffic tends to peak during North American evenings, that is, around 8 PM (PT). The dip during low traffic is quite distinct, but that’s the case at most poker sites.

Cash game traffic is not as Texas Holdem intense as on many other sites. With the huge array of games offered at Ultimate Bet, of course players tend to be more versatile. If you like a varied diet, you’ll often be able to find good games in other arenas than no-limit holdem (more below).

Software & Graphics

UB poker software has its own design, and it is very stable. The poker servers seem to manage their job reliably even when the biggest tournaments are played.

Player notes are supported, there is a sophisticated statistics functionality with in-depth information about your games, and you can keep track of friends and favorite players using the buddy function.

Like many serious poker sites, UB has introduced resizable tables. You can shrink them or enlarge them freely to fit your needs and preferences, within certain bounds of course. This is one of the primary improvements in online poker lately, in my opinion. If you play a lot of simultaneous tables, the mini-table view allows you to keep an easy overview.

UB offers a poker client for Windows. As a Mac or Linux user, you'll need a PC emulator to accommodate the UB software.

Naming the executable file mainclient.exe is pretty stupid IMHO. Typically some developer who doesn't understand the user perspective. Anyway, that's the one you're supposed to double-click on if you don't have a shortcut, and that's the name that will be displayed in the task list in case you need to kill the process some time.

UB has put in blackjack and casino as their own tabs in the poker lobby. Something that makes me personally halfway suicidal. After all, there are no tabs for Viagra or cheap insurances, so why casino? It's got nothing to do with poker.

Game Variety

Game selection at UB is excellent. Texas Holdem, Omaha high and high/low, and Seven Card Stud high and high/low make up he full standard kit. Then there are a range of more or less exotic poker variations such as Triple Draw Lowball (2-7 and A-5), Pineapple and Razz (Seven Card Stud low.)

With the advent of the $50,000 HORSE event in WSOP in 2006, mixed games have grown in popularity across the poker world, both live and online. UB features HORSE games as well as two other mixed up species (HOSE and HO.)

No-limit and pot-limit formats are available for most games, and for the genuine action junkie there are heads-up cash tables for Texas Holdem, Omaha and even 7-Card-Stud.

UltimateBet Becomes UB

The much appreciated poker room Ultimate Bet Poker changes its name to simply UB. That's what it's actually been called anyway, so this shouldn't be a problem for players.

The software platform has also been changed. Read the news about UB Poker and the Cereus Poker Network...
