Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 Peter Eastgate Wins WSOP 2008 !

After almost five hours of headup play against Ivan Demidov, Danish Peter Eastgate won the 2008 WSOP Main Event! He's the youngest player ever to win the Main Event, erasing Phil hellmuth's record from 1989.

Peter Eastgate of Denmark is the new World Series of Poker champion.

After seven days of play in August, three months of waiting, two days of final table play and finally five hours of headup play, Peter Eastgate managed to go all the way.

His opponent, young Russian math guy Ivan Demidov, recent third place finisher in the WSOP Europ Main Event, seemed to many commentators like an insurmountable poker wall. His careful, steady but yet forceful game seemed destined to get the best of his opponent, sooner or later.

Meanwhile Eastgate was just waiting for an occasion to lure Demidov into a trap.

The occasion came when Eastgate turned a flush and played it weakly. On the river Demidov made a move and was severly beaten. The match changed, Demidov had to change gears and start hunting.

Not much later, the turn brought two pair to Demidov and a straight to Eastgate. Demidov bet out and Eastgate just flat called, after some deliberation. When Demidov moved in on the river, it was all over.

Unexpected success for Eastgate

Before the headup started, Eastgate told Danish news site acemag.dk that he was suprised.

"I'm at a loss for words. As simple as that. I never imagined I would go this far. I ws hoping for like fifth place. and now I'm headup. It's just too wild," said Eastgate.
