Adelson Raises the Ante With Addition of Brown to Coalition
In case you missed it, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown has joined up with Sheldon Adelson's Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling.
Big deal you say? If you haven't already done so, check out his open letter announcing his new National Co-Chair position.
He spoke on how he used to support online gambling but changed his mind after seeing the marketing tactics geared towards kids.
Sensationalized? I was thinking the same...and then I looked at his examples.
I will give the man a little credit. He points out instances that will make some doubt the motives in casino advertising.
Santa's Surprise? Nobody saw the link with kids on this one?
Cash Puppy - Yes there are a lot of dog lovers, but this one looks a bit kiddish to me too.
Kitty Glitter - Ok, I'll give the marketers a pass on this one as we all know at least a dozen crazy cat ladies. I also think of the "oooh kitties" kids that would see this.
Those are three just at quick glance.
Brown is still a well respected figure in California and his joining Adelson will help to sway public opinion in Adelson's favor. On another site, I called this a coup by Adelson.
And no, I do not agree with the Coalition. However, I don't dismiss them as easily as some colleagues have.
Have you seen the video below talking about online gambling? While a bit corny, a little polish and support by Brown's "discoveries" are going to cause problems in California.
Adelson's not going away without a fight and, in my opinion, he just raised the ante.
