Java Poker Odds Calculator

This Java poker odds calculator is a complement to our other poker odds calculator, which is programmed in Flash. Some like this one better, some prefer the other one.

Choose a game from the list, lay out the cards and see what your winning chances are. You may be surprised that the worst hand often has pretty good chances, maybe in the 10 to 20 percent or so. No wonder you get all these bad beats, then!

Taking the average over several hands

If you don’t know the opponent’s cards, you may have to try out a couple of different alternatives and then estimate an average. When you take the average, remember that some hands are more likely than others.

Let’s say that you have AK, the board shows A-K-5 and you think your opponent has either AA, KK, QQ or AK. Since two aces and two kings are “gone” (in your hand and on the board), there’s just one AA combination left, one KK, four AK, and six QQ.

Unlikely events have less influence

Even though you’re a big underdog to AA and KK, these cases are so unlikely that your average winning chances end up somewhere around 60-65 percent.

The subject of probability in poker is rather large, and not so easy to master. Read more about it in our section for articles on poker probability.
