Negreanu Surprises Isildur1 in Showdown Rematch
The much anticipated rematch between Daniel Negrenau and Viktor "Isildur1" Blom in the PokerStars SuperStar Showdown played out on Sunday, but not the way most expected it to.
Last weekend, Negreanu dropped $150,000 to Blom in the first part of the match. Daniel looked to avenge the loss and spent all week practicing on PokerStars.
Early on, things looked pretty much the same as they did in last week's challenge. Isildur1 jumped out to an early lead and for the first 855 hands, that lead hovered between $15k and $50k.
That lead steadily grew until isildur1 was up over $110,000 and looked to take Daniel's stack yet again.
Around hand 1,500 the tide started to turn back to the favor of Negreanu.
In the 151 hands following, Negreanu took down over $102,000 in pots to cut Isildur1's lead to just $49,500. He further cut this lead to just $7,800 before Blom pulled back ahead $20,000.
Then with about 348 hands left in the match, Negreanu took the lead in the match for the first time. He managed to hold onto the lead for the remainder of the match.
With 14 hands left, Negreanu had a $8,800 lead and could have folded his way to an easy victory. Not one to take the easy route, Negreanu played to the end and wound up padding his winnings.
In the closing hands, both pocket queens and pocket aces held up against Blom to give Daniel a final total of $26,500 for the day.
While this edition of the challenge goes down as a loss, Blom finished the two matches against Negreanu up $123,500. This loss against Negreanu officially makes Blom 5-2 in the Superstar Showdown Challenge. His only other loss came against online poker icon Isaac Haxton.
According to an announcement made at the end of the match, the next Superstar Showdown Challenge will kick off next Sunday as Isildur1 will take on Scott "urnotindanger" Palmer.
This next match will also be split up into two parts with the two players playing a total of 5,000 hands.
