High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story Review

User Review: High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story - Submitted by yo its dus (Score: 5)

Pros:

- Reflects on the younger years of Stu's life and how he used to clean up in gin rummy.
- Michael Imperioli plays Stu better than any other actor would have.

Cons:

- Doesn't show much of Stu's poker career.
- Makes me want to go to AC and play in higher stakes than I can afford.

Additional Information

I came home from school this weekend, and finally got to sit down and watch this movie. The movie portrays the life of Stuey "The Kid" Ungar, the best CARD player of all time. A basic biography of how Stuey always craved action, and the downfalls, and high lights of his life. Michael Imperioli of Sopranos fame (Christopher), plays the perfect role in being Stu, and I never realized the somewhat resemblance of the two.

The movie goes through the different stages of Stu's life and shows how he started winning big at such a young age. I highly recommend this movie to ANY poker fan, and anyone who is interested in the history of poker.

Conclusion:

Without a doubt Stu Ungar was the best card player of all time. I started playing cards when I watched a copy of the 97 WSOP that my cousin gave me, and Stu inspired me to be who I am today as far as poker is involved. It seemed as if he had to ability to read right through a person's soul and cards. If he didnt get involved with drugs and stayed healthy who knows how many more WSOP tournaments he would have won.

Stuey is the man. I look up to everything he did concerning Poker, too bad for all the other stuff though.

It's a pity that someone as interesting as Stu Ungar had such a bad film made about him. The film fails to appropriately address what made him special--how his mind worked. This film should have been A Beautiful Mind with Poker, but was in reality a cheesy TV movie quality film, and like most biographical films it suffered from a real lack of story.
