Play Poker Like the Pros; Phil Hellmuth Jr. Review

11 April 2008, By: Pokerjunkie.com

What a book! If you are a beginner, novice, or expert player there is definitely a part in this book for you! It leads in with a very nice chapter about how skilled players will in the long run beat out lucky players. This section is a great lead in for the book and really tells and interesting story about Phil Hellmuth Jr.

Pros :

This book is jsut outstanding right off the bat after the introduction (chapter 1) of the book it gives you a detailed description on how to play the cadillac of poker, no limit texas hold ?em. Even if you are a novice or expert player it is good to read this section since it could teach you a few thing you need to know about the game. The main chapters in the book I especially liked was Limit hold ?em advanced strategy. Even though it is for limit hold it is perfect for NL holdem. This chapter has changed my game drastically! Rite after I read this chapter I played poker with my self (delt out as if there were 7 people and played each hand is if it was me) and just practiced the techniques. Then in the next turni I played in I placed second out of 16! This book can make any beginner into an intermediate player in no time. Then with its easy to read chapters it can take you from that intermediate level to expert. Now for all you expert players there is plenty of literature in this book for you to help you have your ?A? game every game! It gives you little tips and secretes that will improve any persons game.

Cons:

In this outstanding book there were only very few cons! The main con I thought was that the book was a little lengthy. It was lengthy mainly because how much detail this book goes into but some times it goes into a little too much detail. The only other con I have is that some parts in this book were tough to read, mainly parts in the advanced strategy guides. Other than those miner flaws this book was great!

Conclusion:

Overall this book is outstanding! It improved my game from C to an A and gave me world of confidence at the poker table! It tells you tips that only one of the greatest poker players in the game today, Phil Helmuth Jr., would know! This book is a must read for all levels!

Great review, but I also want to add about the descriptions of the other types of poker in the book as well. It goes into an in-depth analysis of Omaha, Omaha 8-b, Seven Card Stud, and others, too. It's a good buy for the beginning and advanced player, IMO.

First poker book I ever bought. Got me off to a great start and I feel like it significantly moved up my learning curve & sped up the process immensely.

First book I've bought and read more than a chapter of. I'm still currently reading it, but it has greatly increased my game at the table.

so far this is my least fav. poker book it doesnt cover that much on no limit hold em. phil helmuth says he has invented a new way of playing poker he creates 4 poker player types called animal types.the jackal(crazy and unpredictable) the elephant(plays way too many hands)the mouse(very conservative) the lion(skilled and tough too beat). but personnaly i dont think he covers nearly as much as he should on this subject.

Like most of my other poker reads, I have skimmed through some of the book, and carefully read other parts of the book. For the most part, this book is geared towards beginning poker players, and I really didn't pick up much for this book. Being written by Phil Hellmuth however, I still read through it, as he included many interesting real life scenarios and stories he had from poker.

If you know what you're doing poker-wise, then this book most likely will not give you any new insight into your game, but it definitely is a good read nonetheless.

Sounds like a great book. I dont mind the fact that its really long as long as it gives me the info im looking for. Sounds good so i might just be able to get it.

Great book. Hellmuth defines the way to play A-x suited. The book is more about Limit than No Limit, but it's invaluable either way. Hellmuth is a character, and that comes across in his writing.

actually just read part of this book (the Hold Em section, not really that much into Stud-Omaho although may browse those eventually).

it is a good book, but at the same time, its kind of disappointing. A lot of the techniques phil talks about, such as re-raising with lower pair and such have such negative consequences, and he just seems to focus a lot more on the positives of them.

Still a great book, although i wish there was more focus on No Limit instead of so much focus on Limit.
