Jason Mercier Takes Down WPT Alpha 8 St Kitts

Jason Mercier has been having the best year of his live tournament career in 2014 -- despite not winning a single title.

That changed on Sunday when he took down the WPT Alpha 8 St. Kitts for $727,500.

The $100,000 buy-in event drew 15 entries that included Antonio Esfandiari, Daniel Colman and Olivier Busquet. Only three spots paid but it was all Mercier in the end, who defetaed petroleum company CEO Kathy Lehne heads-up.

Mercier's win gives him $3.67 million in earnings this year and $13.6 million lifetime. His best cash this year came in June in one of Bellagio's $100,000 High Roller events. He finished runner-up to Dan Smith and earned $1.62 million.

Chess Grandmaster Shahade Wins Largest Open Face Chinese Tournament Ever

Jennifer Shahade, Philadelphia chess grandmaster and poker player, took down the €10,000 Open-Face Chinese Poker World Championship High Roller in Prague on Tuesday.

The event drew a stacked field of 23 of the game's top OFC players including Sorel Mizzi, Jason Mercier, Alex Kostritsyn and Rafi Amit.

The game played was Pineapple Open Face Chinese Poker, a variant of OFC where three cards are dealt each turn after the initial deal. Players play two cards and discard the third.

Shahade survived a final table that included Ilya Bulychev and Iakov Onuchin. She eventually came out on top for the €100,000 top prize. This was Shahade's largest buy-in event of her career.
