Tuesday, Sep 6, 2011 Mercier, Moorman, Cody Headline British Poker Awards
Jason Mercier, Chris Moorman and Jake Cody, among others, took home titles at the British Poker Awards on Saturday.
Presented as part of the Poker in the Park festival in Hanover Square, London, the nominations had been posted and voting open online for a few weeks.
Categories included Best International Player, Best Cash Player, Best Tournament Player and Best Online Player.
Mercier was a somewhat surprising winner in the International Player category, beating out poker luminaries including Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Phil Hellmuth, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Erik Seidel.
Mercier's strong results on the European Poker Tour, including wins at EPT San Remo and the EPT London High Rollers event in 2008 and a 4th-place finish at the 2009 WSOPE in London, likely help expain his strong support among the Brits.
Chris Moorman was the not-so-surprising winner of the Best Online Poker Player Award, having dominated much of the UK online poker scene for the last few years.
He'll also likely be in contention for a few of the live awards next year as he broke through in a big way this year with five cashes at the 2011 WSOP including two final tables and a runner-up finish in the $10k No-Limit Holdem Six-Max event.
Jake Cody was the big winner of the day taking home both Best Tournament Player and the Overall Player of the Year awards.
Cody's biggest win was the $25k Heads-Up Championship at the 2011 World Series of Poker.
