The European Poker Tour began to roll towards its conclusion with the Scandinavian Open, held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The home of current World Poker Champion Peter Eastgate. 462 players showed up to try to emulate poker stars like Eastgate and Gus Hansen, creating a not-unimpressive $3,832,648 prize pool.
EPT 2009 in Retrospect: Scandinavian Open
The Scandinavian Open appropriately produced a final table full of Scandinavians. The chip leader of the final six was Anders Langset, with well over a million, followed by Jussi Nevanlinna, Rasmus Nielsen, then Peter Hedlund, Petter Petersson and Jens Kyllonen on the short stack. With most of the stacks fairly close together, it looked to be a hotly contested battle where anyone could win.
Rasmus Nielsen, representing the home country, was the first to fall, when he made a move with A9 and the rolling Langset woke up with AK. Lanset padded his lead and sat back as Hedlund removed Peterson from contention when Petersson's ill timed all-in move with A2 was knocked off by Hedlund's AQ.
Langset Looks Strong
With Langset holding well more than half the remaining chips in play, things looked bleak for the other three Scandanavians. Perhaps they were trying to generate someone who could compete with Langset, as at one point all three were involved in a pot with Nevanlinna all-in. Nevanlinna held K9 and was in big trouble to Kyllonen's 99. However Hedlund ended up getting the best of it with A4 when an ace hit the turn and Nevanlinna was gone.
The Tide Turns
Things quickly turned for the early chipleader Langset when he snap called Kyllonen's KQ all in bet with 88. A queen on the river and Langset was suddenly in trouble. He then had the misfortune to make a move on a three spade board while Kyllonen was holding the nuts and just like that, Langset was gone.
This left it down to the Swede Hedlund and the Finn Kylllonen. When Kyllonen was lucky enough to get pocket jacks when Hedlund held AJ, it was just Jens Kyllonen, the 2009 EPT Scandinavian Open champion.
