There isn't a single person that hasn't been impacted in some way by the current economic crisis. Unemployment in the United States is up to levels that have not been seen by the Great Depression. Communities and even governments are struggling to find some way to overcome the current economic crisis. One area that has been overlooked as a way to strengthen the economy is poker.

Separating Poker as a Game of Skill

In many states in the United States, gambling in general is illegal. Poker is considered by many states to be a form of gambling. However, anyone that is a serious player realizes that poker is a game of skill.

The debate has been ongoing whether poker is indeed a game of skill. Pennsylvania has in recent weeks declared that poker is indeed a game of skill and lobbyists and lawmakers are trying to convince Washington of the same. If a final declaration could be made that poker is indeed a game of skill, this would open up the new doors and revenue streams.

Poker Creates Jobs

Running a poker room, whether live or virtual, requires people to setup and run the room. If the room is virtual, you will need a team of programmers, network administrators, computer technicians, support personnel, and room admins in order to run a room.

If you are running a live card room, you will need brushes, dealers, floor supervisors, chip runners, cage runners, porters, and even food service people in order to run the games successfully. In some cases you may even employ prop or shill players for your games. In essences, you will create jobs by running poker rooms.

These jobs will also help the community where the card room is located. Granted, the argument will always be raised that poker will attract some shadier characters to the area. However, proper security will help to keep this problem to a minimum. When a community has more jobs for its citizens, the community prospers.

Taxing Poker

The day that online poker in the U.S. becomes legal is when Congress figures out a way to tax poker online.  Online poker is a multi Billion dollar industry. The tax revenue receive from online poker could help to strengthen the economy and help to pay some of the massive deficit that the county has incurred.

Opening online poker back up to the U.S. will likely result in another online poker boom. New sites will line up for the change to earn some of America's money. As a result, more tax revenue will be brought into the United States. Also, more jobs will be created as a result of the online poker rooms opening up.

The bottom line is that poker is a money making industry. Poker will not solve the global economic crisis. There are too many problems going on for poker to fix alone. However, taking advantage of the popularity of the game can help to improve the global economic situation.
