Believing You Lost Flopping Top Set
I was sitting playing 3-6 at Turning Stone Casino, Verona, New York. I had been playing for quite awhile and I was unable to catch any hands and take down pots. I had bought in for around 100 dollars and i was stuck right around 85 dollars when I was in late position 3 away on the right of the button.
I was dealt K(h)K(s), and the player under the gun raises it to 6, 3 people fold, then the player two to my right re-raises to 9, so i'm thinking they both have AK or AQ or even a low pocket pair. The next two players fold and i make it 12 capping the betting pre-flop. The small blind folds and the big blind calls, so there is 4 players to flop with about 50 dollars in the pot already. The flop comes 7(d) K(c) 9(d), big blind checks to the first one who raised pre-flop and he bet out 3. The man two to my right raises to 6. Now i sit back think about it for a minute, there is a possible flush draw, and i have top set. I must re-raise to show power in the hand. I am presenting the best hand or best draw at this point. The big blind just calls, the player immediately to his left re-raises it to 9. The player two to my left caps it at 12. Now im really doubting that i am going to be good going to the turn and river, because no one seems to be scared of my hand and how im playing it. I call, big blind folds, and the player who bet out after the flop calls the capped bet. There is now three of us to the turn. The pot is now at 90 dollars.
The turn comes 3(d), making the flush draw alive and working well. First player to act who bet out after the flop bets out 6 as soon as the 3(d) falls on the turn. The player to my right raises to 12, and again im forced to find out if my hand is the best or not, so with my aggressive style i re-raise it 18. The player who bet out after the flop and turn, contemplates the call and re-raises me capping the betting at 24 on the turn. Now there is three of us to the river and the pot is at around 160 dollars. I'm forced to call any bets with only 18 dollars left and the pot size giving me good odds.
The river comes 2(s) a blank, the best possible card for me to see on the river. Now i have to think im still good with my set of K's. The player once again, bets out on the river and the player to my right re-raises him to 12. Now i only have 18 dollars left, i either move all-in and re-raise the raiser and make it 18 and put the other players both on two pair and hope they call because you cannot fold two pair with the pot odds this big. So i thought about it and moved all-in, re-raise i announce im all-in. The player that kept betting out re-raises and caps it. The player to my right thinks about it for a good amount of time, and then calls.
The side pot of 12 is between the under the gun and the player two to my right. The player under the gun shows 9-7 suited in clubs for two pair, (7 K 9 3 2) and the player two to my right shows pocket AA (with the ace of diamonds) showing he had top pair and that was all. So for the main pot of around 205 dollars i flip up my pocket K's for top set and take the pot down. I just could not believe i held up with top set, with all the raising and re-raising, i put someone on at least a flush with the three diamonds out there after the turn. But these two players were playing so aggressive with decent hands which put me into a position believing i was not good when i had the best hand from the get go.
