Friday, Jul 27, 2012 5 Most Important Moments of the 2012 WSOP
Here are our five most important moments of the 2012 World Series of Poker:
1) Vanessa Selbst Wins $2,500 10-Game Event
Vanessa Selbst solidified her spot as the best female poker player in the world right now after winning the $2,500 10-Game Event.
This event not only made her the first woman to win an open bracelet since she accomplished the feat in 2008, but it also made her the first woman EVER to win a mixed bracelet.
Selbst had already established herself as being a superstar in NL and in PL Omaha. After this win, she proves that she can play all the games well.
She is still far from being the best overall female player of all-time, but she definitely made her case to be put into the discussion.
2) Phil Hellmuth Wins Bracelet #12
Love him or hate him, you can't deny that the man has talent in poker.
When Hellmuth is at the final table, everyone watches. Chances are that many of you out there secretly were pulling for him to win too.
When he made it heads-up in the $2,500 Razz event the scenario couldn't have been better for bracelet #12.
Only one current player realistically has a chance of ever catching him for total bracelets and that's provided Hellmuth never wins another bracelet.
Count on Hellmuth to win 2 to 3 more bracelets before the game passes him by.
3) Phil Ivey Makes Five Final Tables
Phil Ivey's five final tables at the 2012 World Series of Poker has been met with mixed reviews.
Some called it a great accomplishment and others called him a big loser at the event since he did not capture a bracelet.
The fact still remains that after a year where Ivey played zero events at either the WSOP or the WSOP-Europe, he came back and made five final tables.
This was an important statement by the greatest player in the game that he is a) still great and b) that he's put Black Friday behind him.
4) Hille and Baumann Bubble Final Table of Main Event
While the final table of the 2012 World Series of Poker may be a bit lacking, the drama building up to the final table may help give ESPN some of its highest ratings in years.
Elisabeth Hille and Gaelle Baumann finished 11th and 10th, respectively - the highest finishes for women since Annie Duke's 10th-place finish in 2000.
This runs capped off what was an eye-opening World Series of Poker for women in general.
While neither woman made the final table, their performances will inspire women that want to take up the game to take that first step.
5) Mizrachi Wins $50,000 Poker Players Championship for Second Time
Phil Hellmuth added to his legend at the 2012 World Series of Poker and Michael Mizrachi became a legend when he became the first to win the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship for the second time.
This win goes far beyond awarding Mizrachi his third WSOP bracelet. It puts him in a different league as he has accomplished something truly historic.
While he has been a superstar of the game for a while, this win promotes him to legendary status.
In addition, this cements Mizrachi's rep as a mixed-game player and now we all have to consider him to be among the best all-around poker players of the current era
