Thursday, Jun 4, 2009 2009 WSOP - Freddie Ellis Seven-Card Stud World Champion

74-year-old east coast stud legend Freddie Ellis won the $10,000 Seven-Card Stud World Championship at the 2009 World Series of Poker.

The final table lasted 13 hours, but Ellis finally caught a flush to eliminate his last opponent, Eric Drache. The victory gave Ellis $373,744 in prize money and his first WSOP bracelet.

In fact, this was the second poker tournament Ellis played in his life, but he was determined to win it.

"This is the main reason I came to Las Vegas, to play in the World Championship of Seven-Card Stud," Ellis said.

He might be new to the big tournament scene, but Ellis has played a lot of poker in his life.

He usually plays in the $600-$1,200 limit "Mixed Game," at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City.  The typical game is an odd mix of Seven-Card Stud, Eight-or-Better, and No-Limit Hold'em.

Ellis lives in New York where he made a fortune as a real estate broker. But he also has a background in the entertainment industry.

"I'm a singer and I first came to New York to go into show business. I then got into real estate starting in 1967 and have been very active in that."

"I started playing poker just to do something different. I only started playing in the casino when Atlantic first legalized poker in (1993)."
