Monday, Nov 10, 2008 2008 WSOP Main Event - Ready for Heads-Up
Nine players, known as the November Nine, came to the final table of the 2008 WSOP Main Event, but now only two remain - Peter Eastgae and Ivan Demidov.
The two players will meet again today (Monday) to play heads-up for the world championship title and the $9,152,416 first prize.
22-year-old Eastgate - who has the chance to become the youngest world champion of poker ever - was extremely hot on the penultimate day of the tournament. He knocked out four players, two of them after hitting full houses on the river. The Dane will be chipleader with 79 500 000.
Ivan Demidov, 27, kept a lower profile but the Russian player has had a sensational year. A couple of months ago he finished third in the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event and now he has a real shot at becoming the new world champion of poker. He definitely has enough chips to give Eastgate a good fight, 57 725 000.
Ok, but what happened to the rest of the players? Here is a quick run-down of the spectacular action at the Rio Casino:
Craig Marquis was knocked out in ninth place by Scott Montgomery. He was all-in pre-flop with 7-7 and flopped a set, but busted out of the Main Event when Montgomery hit a runner-runner straight with his A-Q.
Kelly Kim busted out in eighth place after moving all-in short-stacked and getting called by three players. Among the callers was Darus Suharto who flopped a pair of nine and sent Kim packing.
David "Chino" Rheem was busted in seventh place with A-K against Peter Eastgate's A-Q (all-in pre-flop). Eastgate flopped a queen and that was it for "Chino".
Darus Suharto was eliminated in sixth place when he moved all-in with A-8 and got called by Montgomery who had A-Q. Montgomery made an ace-high flush on the turn and Suharto was drawing dead.
Scott Montgomery was knocked out in fifth place. He lost the majority of his stack with A-9 v.s. KK (Demidov), and shortly after moved in with A-3 against Eastgate's 6-6. An ace on the flop and one more on the turn gave Montgomery hope, but a nasty 6 on the river ended his dream of becoming world champion.
Ylon Schwartz raised all-in on the river against Peter Eastgate when the board showed K-8-2-K-5. It probably would have been a good move if Eastgate hadn't hit a full house on the river with his pocket fives.
Dennis Phillips was eliminated in third place when he tried to bluff Eastgate on a J-4-3 flop. Eastgate had, however, flopped a set with 3-3, and Phillips was in big trouble in T-9. When an ace fell on the turn the former chipleader was drawing dead.
Final-table results so far:
3. Dennis Phillips $4,517,773 4. Ylon Schwartz $3,774,974 5. Scott Montgomery $3,096,768 6. Darus Suharto $2,418,562 7. David "Chino" Rheem $1,772,650 8. Kelly Kim $1,288,217 9. Craig Marquis $900,670
